Background
Mrs. Haberman and Albert Einstein
Living in many different communities in 11 states, has shaped my ability to get along with diverse groups of people and to be open minded about new ideas and cultures.
A zeal for wildlife was my inspiration for pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While attending Stockton College of New Jersey, I participated in two internships: a piping plover beach nesting bird survey with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and a zookeeping internship with the Cape May County Zoo.
My first taste of teaching came while I was working as a Forest Protection Officer with the US Forest Service in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Each day I patrolled trails for violators of park rules and regulations while performing trail maintenance. I also worked at the visitor center on an as needed basis teaching “Leave No Trace” and educating visitors about the park's ecology and history. It was here I discovered how much I enjoyed teaching!
After working as an Animal Caretaker, for the USDA, at their quarantine facility in Key West, FL, I was hired to work at Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. As a zookeeper, I learned a lot about global conservation efforts and zoology. After two years as a zookeeper, I was promoted to Education Curator. This meant I was in charge of the volunteer docent program as well as developing and presenting standards based curriculum to K-12 schools throughout the Panhandle of Nebraska. During this time I also became a Boy Scout merit badge counselor. I loved being able to share my passion about animals, conservation, and the environment with others!
My experience as the Education Curator for Riverside Zoo led me to pursue a degree in Education. I enrolled in the alternative teacher certification program at Chadron State College to pursue my Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Science Education with an endorsement in Natural Science (7-12). During my first semester in the program, Scottsbluff High School hired me as a Biology teacher where I taught Biology and Environmental Science for seven years. In 2012, I received my certificate in STEM Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University.
We moved to Colorado in 2012 where I have been teaching middle school science at Excel Academy Charter School. I enjoyed teaching the 7th and 8th grade Core Knowledge science curriculum which included physics, chemistry, biology, earth and space science until 2022 when we adopted McGarw-Hill's Inspire Science curriculum. I have been incorporating OpenSciEd and PhET simulations to enhance rigor, differentiation, and engagement opportunities for all students. In 2016, I obtained my endorsement as a Gifted Education Specialist.
Starting in 2022/2023 I began working as the 8th grade science teacher, K-8 science curriculum coordinator, and instructional coach for Excel Academy.
